Clérigos Tower presents never-before-seen works by Nadir Afonso in the exhibition “The Geometry of the Absolute”
The Brotherhood of Clérigos and the Nadir Afonso Foundation present the exhibition “Nadir Afonso: The Geometry of the Absolute”, on display at the Clérigos Tower in Porto from October 24th, Friday.
The exhibition features 30 gouache works that reveal Nadir Afonso’s mastery in exploring form and colour, showcasing his unmistakable geometric precision and sense of harmony. Among the pieces, 23 are previously unseen, and 7 will be shown in Porto for the first time, offering visitors a unique opportunity to discover and admire the artist’s work.
A celebration of one of the most important Portuguese artists of the 20th century, known for his pursuit of aesthetic perfection, the exhibition strengthens the Clérigos’ artistic programme and reaffirms its commitment to promoting art and offering high-quality cultural experiences to all visitors.
More than just an exhibition, “The Geometry of the Absolute” is an invitation to contemplate the geometric and poetic universe that runs through Nadir Afonso’s entire oeuvre, in a cultural setting that unites historical heritage and contemporary art in a truly enriching dialogue. Hosting Nadir Afonso’s works at the Clérigos Tower and Museum marks a deeply meaningful moment — a meeting between two legacies that reflect Portugal’s cultural identity.
“For the city of Porto, this exhibition represents a tribute to Portuguese art and an opportunity to bring the public closer to a creator whose work transcends borders. It is also a sign of the city’s cultural vitality, which continues to establish itself as a destination of excellence — not only for its heritage but also for its ability to host great figures of modern art,” says António Tavares, Executive Director of Clérigos Tower.
Laura Afonso, President of the Nadir Afonso Foundation, adds: “Nadir Afonso was a great admirer of the Clérigos Tower. He climbed it several times to contemplate and find inspiration in the marvellous view of Porto from 75 metres above the ground. Bringing this selection of gouaches to the Clérigos is a way to continue sharing the versatility and depth of his work — a visual language that still inspires and provokes reflection today.”
